Bhagavad Gita 1.8

भवान्भीष्मश्च कर्णश्च कृपश्च समितिञ्जयः ।
अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च सौमदत्तिस्तथैव च ॥

You yourself, Bhishma, Karna, Kripa—who is always victorious in battle—Ashwatthama, Vikarna, and the son of Somadatta (Bhurishrava) are among the distinguished leaders of our army.

After announcing that he will name the principal leaders of his own army, Duryodhana begins listing them. He first addresses Dronacharya himself, followed by prominent warriors such as Bhishma, Karna, Kripacharya, Ashwatthama, Vikarna, and Bhurishrava, the son of Somadatta. These figures were among the most respected and capable fighters on the Kaurava side. By mentioning them one by one, Duryodhana emphasizes the strength and experience present within his own ranks. The verse reflects his effort to reinforce confidence by highlighting the presence of powerful commanders who could lead and support the Kaurava forces in battle.

Administrative Reflections

This verse illustrates the importance of recognising capable leadership within an institution. By naming experienced and respected warriors, Duryodhana attempts to strengthen morale and remind his teacher of the strong leadership available on their side. In administration, acknowledging the competence of colleagues and leaders plays an important role in building institutional confidence. Effective systems rely not only on formal authority but also on the credibility and capability of the individuals entrusted with responsibility. Recognising and utilizing such leadership strengthens coordination, trust, and collective effectiveness.
