Bhagavad Gita 1.42

दोषैरेतैः कुलघ्नानां वर्णसङ्करकारकैः ।
उत्साद्यन्ते जातिधर्माः कुलधर्माश्च शाश्वताः ॥

Because of these faults that arise from the destruction of the family and the resulting social disorder, the long-established duties of communities and families are destroyed.

Arjuna continues explaining the consequences of family destruction (kula-kṣaya). He argues that when social disorder arises, it gradually weakens the established duties and responsibilities that guide both families and communities.

These duties—referred to as kula-dharma and jāti-dharma—represent the ethical and social practices that help maintain stability across generations. If these traditions disappear due to conflict and disorder, the structure that sustains moral conduct and social harmony also begins to collapse.

Thus, Arjuna fears that the war will not only bring immediate suffering but will also disrupt the ethical foundations that hold society together.

Administrative Reflections

This verse emphasizes the importance of preserving the institutional and moral frameworks that support social stability. When systems of responsibility and shared values weaken, disorder can gradually spread through society. In governance and public administration, protecting institutions, traditions, and ethical norms becomes essential for maintaining long-term stability and social cohesion.
