Why is the world today confronted with a crisis of availability of and access to freshwater resources?

Although water covers roughly 71% of the Earth’s surface, freshwater represents only about 2.5%, with the vast majority locked in glaciers, ice caps, and deep aquifers. United Nations reports highlight that over 2 billion people worldwide lack safe drinking water, reflecting a global crisis of physical availability and economic access.

Key Factors Confronting Freshwater Availability and Access

  • 1. Demographic Growth and Urbanization:
    • A rising global population creates expanding per-capita demand for domestic consumption, sanitation, and urban municipal supply, concentrating water stress in major metropolitan centers.
  • 2. Unsustainable Agricultural Extraction:
    • Global agriculture accounts for roughly 70% of freshwater withdrawals. Distortive agricultural subsidies encourage water-intensive monocultures (paddy, sugarcane, alfalfa) in arid and semi-arid regions.
    • Virtual Water Trade: Exporting water-intensive agricultural commodities effectively exports scarce national water reserves from arid zones.
  • 3. Overexploitation of Groundwater Aquifers:
    • Mechanized deep tube-well pumping extracts groundwater faster than natural recharge rates, causing water tables to fall and inducing coastal seawater intrusion.
  • 4. Severe Anthropogenic Water Pollution:
    • Untreated municipal sewage, industrial effluents, and agrochemical runoff (nitrates, pesticides) contaminate rivers, wetlands, and lakes, rendering accessible surface water unsafe for consumption without expensive purification.
  • 5. Climate Change and Hydrological Volatility:

Overcoming the freshwater crisis demands adopting circular water management: wastewater recycling, rainwater harvesting, watershed rejuvenation, and water-efficient precision agriculture under SDG 6.
