Explanation

The Chauri Chaura incident (1922) led to the arrest of a large number of people, many of whom were initially sentenced to death by the sessions court for killing policemen.

At this crucial stage, Madan Mohan Malaviya, a distinguished lawyer and nationalist leader, along with Krishna Kant, stepped in to provide legal defence in the Allahabad High Court. Their intervention was highly significant as they successfully argued the case and managed to get many death sentences commuted and punishments reduced.

This reflects an important but often overlooked aspect of the freedom struggle—legal resistance alongside mass movements.

Thus, the legal defence was provided by Madan Mohan Malaviya and Krishna Kant.
