सञ्जय उवाच ।
तं तथा कृपयाविष्टमश्रुपूर्णाकुलेक्षणम् ।
विषीदन्तमिदं वाक्यमुवाच मधुसूदनः ॥
Sanjaya said: Seeing Arjuna overwhelmed with compassion, his eyes filled with tears and his mind distressed, Lord Krishna spoke the following words.
At the end of Chapter 1, Arjuna had laid down his bow, unable to fight due to grief and confusion. Now the narration returns to Sanjaya, who describes Arjuna’s condition to King Dhritarashtra. Arjuna is deeply affected by compassion for his relatives and teachers standing on the battlefield. His eyes are filled with tears, and his mind is troubled by sorrow.
Seeing Arjuna in this state, Krishna prepares to respond. This verse marks the moment just before Krishna begins his teachings. The dialogue that follows arises from Arjuna’s emotional crisis and his inability to reconcile his duty as a warrior with his personal attachments.
